Interpreters of Color (ITOC) Recruitment Announcement

Posted by New Jersey Black Deaf Advocates on November 20, 2017 at 6:15 PM

Hello, I’m James Mallory Wiggins, I was State screened in 1992 and later went on to become nationally certified through RID. My motivation for interpreting is from my adopted father Howard; he instilled in me the importance of being accurate in my interpretation and trusted me to lead the way when he needed his voice heard - this led me to where I am today.

I’ve been interpreting for the past 20 years. As a group (ITOC and Allies), my goal is to see us RISE and expand and to see more of us, especially in Leadership roles and in the field of interpreting. I would encourage everyone to do a little bit; as a person of color I know the challenges that are laid before us and that are presented to us, and yet, that has never stopped us from pushing forward.

The question I would ask other members of color is, are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Please consider joining us in making momentous changes that we want to see reflected in our beautiful DIVERSE world.
